Our weekly roundup led the posse to The Dunes — just outside of Farmington, New Mexico. It's a mixture of sand hill climbs, whoops, washes and hardpack, - it's also the kick-off venue for the WeBe Racing Hare scramble series. Super fun if there's been moisture, but sugar sand and deep, loamy corners that swallow bikes whole if it's dry.
The scariest part of riding at the Dunes is the blind corners and rises. Just about everyone who rides there has had a head-on with another rider at some point. So you've gotta be "heads up" at all times if you're riding airbag.
We decided to run a few laps on the race course at tempo to get a good workout in. The conditions were about as good as it gets for late November. A light snow/rain storm brought some much needed moisture to the area, which made for no dust and great, loamy corners. After four laps, the sun was starting to fall behind the hills and the temperature was getting just below comfortable, so we packed up and head home for some grub. Good times.
